A Guide to Finding Joy

February 27, 2024 by Gabe

Have you ever wondered why some people seem naturally happier, even when life throws them curveballs?

In the quest for happiness, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing it’s all about lucky breaks or monumental achievements. Yet, the burgeoning field of positive psychology tells us a different story—one where happiness isn’t just a matter of chance but a skill we can develop with practice. Let’s delve into the science of happiness and discover actionable strategies that can lead us to a more joyful, fulfilling life.

Our actions, attitudes, and daily habits hold the key to significantly enhancing our happiness levels. This is where the magic happens.

Understanding Happiness

Happiness transcends fleeting pleasures, embodying a deep-seated state of well-being characterized by positive emotions, a sense of meaning, and active engagement in life. It’s not just about experiencing temporary joy but also about cultivating a longer-term sense of fulfillment and purpose. It’s a dynamic process, ever-changing and evolving with our life experiences.

Key Factors Influencing Happiness

  1. Genetic Set Point (about 50%): While genetics set a baseline, they don’t dictate our happiness destiny. The exciting part? We have the power to influence the other half significantly.
  2. Life Circumstances (about 10%): External factors like wealth and health impact our happiness, but their role is less substantial than you might think.
  3. Intentional Activities and Mindset (about 40%): This is where the magic happens. Our actions, attitudes, and daily habits hold the key to significantly enhancing our happiness levels.

Strategies to Boost Happiness

  1. Cultivating Gratitude: Gratitude isn’t just feel-good fluff. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology demonstrates that keeping a gratitude journal significantly increases feelings of optimism and life satisfaction. Start by noting three things you’re thankful for each day.
  2. Fostering Social Connections and Community:  Our social ties are essential for lasting happiness.  Prioritize quality time with loved ones and actively seek out a sense of community. Remember, it’s not about the number of friends, but the depth of your connections. Studies consistently show that involvement in groups, volunteering, or joining social clubs greatly enhances well-being and happiness.
  3. Engaging in Physical Activity: Exercise isn’t just for physical health; it’s a potent mood booster. Aim for activities that bring joy, whether it’s a brisk walk or a dance class.
  4. Practicing Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps us savor life’s pleasures and engage fully in the moment. Begin with just five minutes of meditation daily and observe the calmness it brings.
  5. Learning and Growth: Embrace challenges and pursue your passions. Positive psychology research shows that personal growth contributes significantly to our sense of well-being.

Overcoming Happiness Myths

Money and Happiness: While financial stability eases life’s burdens, wealth itself has a limited impact on lasting happiness. It’s the experiences and relationships that money can facilitate that bring true joy.  Money can improve well-being when it removes the stress of meeting basic needs. However, chasing riches just for the sake of it has little impact on lasting happiness. Instead, focus on investing in experiences. Travel, adventures, and creating memories have a stronger link to enduring joy. Studies have shown that experiential purchases provide greater happiness than material ones, highlighting the fleeting joy of acquiring possessions compared to the lasting impact of meaningful experiences. Additionally, research shows that using money to benefit others, whether through donations or gifts, boosts our own happiness significantly more than spending on ourselves.

Happiness Is Selfish: On the contrary, engaging in prosocial behavior not only benefits others but enhances our own happiness. A recent study found that stress could indeed lead to more prosocial behaviors, suggesting a deep connection between our well-being and the act of giving.

Final Thoughts on The Journey to Happiness

Happiness is more than a destination; it’s a way of life. By integrating gratitude, fostering deep connections, staying active, practicing mindfulness, and continually growing, we pave the way for a richer, more satisfying life. Remember, the science of happiness isn’t just about understanding what makes us happy but about putting those insights into action.

This week, choose one happiness strategy to focus on. Whether it’s jotting down things you’re grateful for, reconnecting with a friend, or trying a new hobby, small steps can lead to big changes. Share your experiences with us and let’s embark on this happiness journey together.

To anyone who may be grieving, please know that you are not alone. The pain of losing a loved one can be overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that it’s okay to reach out for help. Whether it’s talking to a friend, family member, or seeking support from a professional, it’s important to have a support system in place. Remember that healing is a process and it’s okay to take as much time as you need. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to feel all of the emotions that come with grief. It’s okay to cry, to be angry, and to feel lost. And remember, there is no “right” way to grieve. Take care of yourself and know that there is always hope for healing and a brighter future ahead.

Embracing Autumn: A Journey to Enhanced Mental Health and Strengthened Relationships

October 2, 2023 by Gabe

As the vibrant hues of Rocky Mountain autumn leaves usher in a season of transformation, so does the opportunity for personal renewal and growth emerge. However, amid the beauty and crisp air of fall lies a hidden challenge: the onset of mental health hurdles exacerbated by shorter days and looming year-end stress. Fear not! Autumn also bears the promise of renewal, a perfect canvas for reevaluating and enhancing mental wellness and fortifying our relationships.

The fall season can both positively and negatively impact mental health. On one hand, the cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery can be a mood booster. Many people enjoy fall activities such as pumpkin picking, leaf peeping, fall sports, and hayrides. These activities can provide opportunities for social interaction and physical activity, which are both beneficial for mental health.

On the other hand, the shorter days and reduced sunlight of the fall season can trigger SAD in some people. Additionally, the fall season can be a time of stress and anxiety for some people, as they prepare for the holidays and the end of the year.

Here are some practical tips for maintaining and improving mental health during the fall season:

  • Enjoy the fall foliage. Spending time in nature has been shown to have a number of mental health benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and boosting cognitive function. Take a walk in the park, go for a hike in the woods, or simply sit outside and enjoy the fall leaves.
  • Get adequate sunlight. Sunlight helps to regulate our circadian rhythms, which are our sleep-wake cycles. Sunlight also helps to boost our production of vitamin D, which is important for mental health. If you live in a place with shorter days during the fall, try to get outside for at least 30 minutes each day.
  • Stay active. Physical activity is another great way to improve mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. Additionally, exercise can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
  • Seek professional help when necessary. If you are struggling with your mental health, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. A therapist can help you to understand your mental health challenges and develop coping mechanisms.

For those grappling with SAD, creating a support network of friends, family, and professionals can be invaluable. Connecting with others, sharing experiences, and seeking help are pivotal steps in navigating the emotional tides of fall.

Additional Resource

In this post, we explore how community engagement and personal choices interplay in nurturing mental health.

The Power of Choices

The choices we make play an important role in our mental health and overall well-being. From our diet to our daily routines, the choices we make can have a significant impact on our mood, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.

For example, eating a healthy diet can help to boost our energy levels and improve our mood. Additionally, getting enough sleep can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, engaging in regular physical activity is another great way to improve mental health.

Here are some examples of positive changes individuals have made to improve their mental health:

  • One person started eating a healthier diet. They cut back on processed foods and sugary drinks, and started eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This change in diet helped to improve their mood, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.
  • Another person started getting regular exercise. They started going for a walk or run every day. This helped to reduce their stress and anxiety levels, and also helped them to feel more energized.
  • A third person started seeing a therapist. They were struggling with anxiety and depression. Therapy helped them to understand their mental health challenges and develop coping mechanisms.
Studies suggest that our mental health can have a significant impact on the mental health of our loved ones. When we are struggling with our mental health, it is important to seek help so that we can protect the well-being of those closest to us.
  • A study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that the happiness of one spouse is strongly linked to the happiness of the other spouse. The study found that when one spouse experiences a positive event, such as a promotion at work, the other spouse is more likely to experience a positive event as well. This suggests that our happiness can have a ripple effect on our loved ones, making them happier as well.
  • Another study, published in the journal Psychological Science, found that children who grow up with depressed parents are more likely to experience depression themselves. The study found that this is partly due to genetics, but it is also due to environmental factors, such as the way depressed parents interact with their children. Depressed parents are more likely to be irritable and withdrawn, which can create a stressful environment for children. This stress can make children more likely to develop depression themselves.
  • A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that children who have caregivers who experience chronic stress are more likely to have behavioral problems. The study found that this is because chronic stress can impair caregivers’ ability to parent effectively. Stressed caregivers are more likely to be irritable and impatient, and they are less likely to be responsive to their children’s needs. This can lead to behavioral problems in children.

The Ripple Effect of Our Decisions

Our choices not only impact our own mental health, but they also have a ripple effect on those closest to us. When we make positive choices for ourselves, we are also setting a good example for our loved ones. Additionally, when we are feeling happy and healthy, we are better able to support our loved ones in their own lives.

  • A parent who makes healthy choices for themselves is more likely to have children who make healthy choices as well. For example, a parent who eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly is more likely to have children who also eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
  • A spouse who makes positive changes in their own life, such as starting therapy or cutting back on alcohol, can have a positive impact on their marriage and family. For example, a spouse who is struggling with depression or anxiety is more likely to be irritable and withdrawn. If this spouse starts therapy and learns to manage their mental health challenges, they are more likely to be present and engaged in their marriage and family.
  • A friend who is struggling with addiction may have a negative impact on their relationships. For example, a friend who is struggling with alcohol addiction may be more likely to cancel plans or make hurtful comments when they are drunk. This can lead to conflict and damage the friendship.

Our emotions and choices, akin to ripples in a pond, extend beyond our personal space, influencing the emotional climate of those around us. The concept of emotional contagion underscores how our mental state, positive or negative, can be ‘contagious,’ impacting the well-being of our loved ones and community.

Making Better Choices this Fall

This is a list of actionable steps for making better choices to nurture one’s own mental health and the well-being of others:

  • Adopt a healthier diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit processed foods and sugary drinks.
  • Engage in regular physical activity. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
  • Get enough sleep. Adults generally need 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
  • Spend time in nature. Take a walk in the park, go for a hike in the woods, or simply sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.
  • Connect with loved ones. Spend time with family and friends, or volunteer in your community.
  • Seek professional help when necessary. If you are struggling with your mental health, don’t be afraid to see a therapist.

As the golden leaves of autumn remind us of the impermanent nature of life’s seasons, let this fall be a testament to our innate power to adapt, grow, and transform. Our choices, laced with self-compassion and awareness, hold the key not just to our own mental sanctuary but to a world where empathy, understanding, and collective well-being flourish.

The Music – Connecting with Emotions

Music has an incredible ability to evoke a range of emotions, transcending language and cultural barriers to resonate with people from all walks of life. George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is no exception. As we listen to the music, we can allow ourselves to be carried away by the rich tapestry of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies that speak to our souls. Each musical element tells a story, evoking feelings of joy, sadness, longing, and triumph.

  5. Reflect on your emotions: Connect with your emotions and explore how they influence your thoughts, actions, and creative processes. By understanding your emotional landscape, you can tap into a deeper well of inspiration.
  6. Set aside time for creativity: Carve out dedicated time in your schedule to nurture your creativity, whether it’s through writing, painting, playing an instrument, or engaging in any other creative pursuit that speaks to you.
  7. Be open to change: Embrace change and be willing to adapt, grow, and evolve. This openness to new experiences and ways of thinking can help you discover fresh sources of inspiration and foster personal growth.

Our “Right Time, Right Place” Ad Campaign

March 22, 2023 by Gabe

The Power of Simple Choices: How Community Prevention Creates a Big Impact

As we go about our daily lives, we make countless small choices that may seem insignificant at the time. However, when we multiply these simple choices out over time and across a community, they can have a powerful impact. This is the idea behind community prevention, which emphasizes the importance of making responsible choices to create a healthier, safer environment for all.

As part of our ongoing efforts to promote community prevention, we’re re-launching a campaign called “Right Time Right Place.” It’s all about encouraging responsible choices around alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, while also emphasizing the importance of being mindful of our surroundings and the impact our actions have on others. But how does this campaign fit into our overall prevention framework?

At its core, our “Right Time Right Place” campaign is based on the idea that simple choices can have a big impact. We know that most people who use alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana do so without consequence, but it only takes a few irresponsible users to create significant negative fallout throughout the community. By promoting responsible choices and mindfulness around these substances, our goal is to reduce the overall community harm caused by their use.

But why focus on simple choices? The answer is that prevention works best when it’s accessible and easy to understand. When we try to tackle complex issues with complex solutions, it can be overwhelming for the average person, which makes it difficult to sustain over time. By focusing on simple choices, we’re making prevention more accessible and achievable for everyone.

And the power of simple choices doesn’t stop with individuals. When multiplied out across a community, these choices can lead to a big difference. When more and more people make conscientious choices, it creates a culture of responsibility that can have ripple effects throughout the community. It sends a message that we value our health and the health of those around us, and that we’re committed to creating safe and healthy environments for all.

If you’re wondering how you can make a difference in promoting community prevention, remember that it starts with simple choices. Be mindful of your surroundings and the impact your actions have on others. Together, we can create a culture of responsibility and promote healthier, safer communities for all.

For more information on CHI’s prevention efforts, or if you need assistance with your own campaign, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

From Self-Doubt to Self-Worth: How Reflection and Compassion Can Change Your Perspective

March 21, 2023 by Gabe

Self-compassion is a powerful tool for improving mental and emotional well-being. It involves treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, especially when we are experiencing difficulties or challenges. Many of us struggle with negative self-talk and self-criticism, but self-compassion can help us cultivate self-acceptance and self-love. In this article, we will explore what self-compassion is, why it is important, and how to practice it.

What is self-compassion?

Self-compassion is the practice of responding to ourselves with kindness and understanding, especially when we are experiencing difficulties or challenges. It involves treating ourselves as we would treat a good friend or loved one, rather than being harsh or critical. Self-compassion is about recognizing our inherent worth and value as human beings, regardless of our flaws or mistakes.

Self-compassion consists of three core components, as identified by researcher Kristin Neff (2003):

  1. Self-kindness: Self-kindness involves being gentle and understanding with ourselves, rather than being harsh or critical. It means treating ourselves with the same care and compassion that we would extend to a friend who was struggling.
  2. Common humanity: Common humanity involves recognizing that we are not alone in our struggles, and that all human beings experience difficulties and challenges. This can help us feel more connected to others and less isolated in our struggles.
  3. Mindfulness: Mindfulness involves being present with our thoughts and feelings, without judgment or resistance. It means observing our thoughts and emotions with curiosity and openness, rather than trying to suppress or avoid them.

Why is self-compassion important?

Self-compassion is important for several reasons:

  1. It can help us reduce negative self-talk and self-criticism, which can contribute to anxiety and depression.
  2. It can help us cultivate self-acceptance and self-love, which can improve our self-esteem and confidence.
  3. It can help us cope with difficult emotions and experiences, such as grief, trauma, or rejection.
  4. It can improve our relationships with others, as we are better able to extend kindness and understanding to ourselves and others.

How can we practice self-compassion?

There are several ways to practice self-compassion:

  1. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. When you are experiencing difficulties or challenges, try to respond to yourself with kindness and understanding, as you would to a friend. Avoid being harsh or critical, and focus on extending care and compassion to yourself.
  2. Recognize your common humanity. Remember that you are not alone in your struggles, and that all human beings experience difficulties and challenges. This can help you feel more connected to others and less isolated in your struggles.
  3. Practice mindfulness. Be present with your thoughts and feelings, without judgment or resistance. Observe your thoughts and emotions with curiosity and openness, and allow them to pass without getting caught up in them.
  4. Practice self-care. Prioritize your own well-being by engaging in activities that nourish and rejuvenate you. This can include exercise, meditation, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy.

The Mental Characteristics of Self-Compassion

Self-compassion and self-care are important for maintaining our mental and emotional well-being. However, many people struggle with these practices, finding it challenging to extend kindness and care to themselves. There are several mental characteristics that may contribute to difficulties with self-compassion and self-care. In this article, we will explore some of these characteristics from a scientific standpoint.

  1. Perfectionism: Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by high standards and a tendency to be overly self-critical. People who struggle with perfectionism often set unrealistic expectations for themselves and may be highly critical of their own perceived flaws and mistakes. This can make it difficult for them to practice self-compassion and self-care, as they may feel that they are not living up to their own standards.

Several studies have shown that perfectionism is associated with lower levels of self-compassion and self-care (Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990; Neff, 2003). Perfectionists may view self-compassion as a sign of weakness or failure, and may struggle to prioritize self-care due to their intense focus on achievement and productivity.

  1. Self-criticism: Self-criticism refers to the tendency to be harsh and critical of oneself. People who struggle with self-criticism may have negative self-talk, focusing on their perceived flaws and mistakes. This can make it difficult for them to extend kindness and care to themselves, as they may feel that they do not deserve it.

Researchers have found that self-criticism is negatively associated with self-compassion and self-care (Gilbert & Irons, 2005; Neff, 2003). People who are highly self-critical may view self-compassion as self-indulgent or selfish, and may struggle to prioritize self-care due to feelings of unworthiness.

  1. Fear of vulnerability: Fear of vulnerability refers to the fear of being open and honest about one’s feelings and needs. People who struggle with fear of vulnerability may avoid self-compassion and self-care because they fear being seen as weak or needy.

It appears that this fear of vulnerability is negatively associated with self-compassion and self-care (Gilbert & Irons, 2005; Neff, 2003). People who fear vulnerability may view self-compassion and self-care as a sign of weakness, and may struggle to prioritize their own needs and well-being as a result.

  1. Low self-esteem: Low self-esteem refers to a negative view of oneself and one’s abilities. People with low self-esteem may struggle with self-compassion and self-care because they do not believe they are deserving of kindness and care.

Low self-esteem has also been negatively associated with self-compassion and self-care (Neff, 2003; Zessin, Dickhäuser, & Garbade, 2015). People with low self-esteem may view self-compassion and self-care as a form of self-indulgence, and may struggle to prioritize their own well-being due to feelings of inadequacy.

Final Thoughts

Remember that self-compassion is a practice, and it takes time and effort to cultivate. Be patient with yourself, and keep practicing self-compassion even when it feels difficult or uncomfortable. With time, you can develop a more compassionate and loving relationship with yourself, which can have a powerful impact on your mental and emotional well-being.

These are some tips to practice self-compassion:

  1. Treat yourself like you would treat a good friend: When you’re struggling or experiencing difficult emotions, try to talk to yourself as you would talk to a good friend. Use kind and understanding language, and avoid harsh or critical self-talk.
  2. Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment or resistance. Observe your thoughts and emotions with curiosity and openness, and allow them to pass without getting caught up in them.
  3. Recognize your common humanity: Remember that you are not alone in your struggles, and that all human beings experience difficulties and challenges. This can help you feel more connected to others and less isolated in your struggles.
  4. Practice self-care: Prioritize your own well-being by engaging in activities that nourish and rejuvenate you. This can include exercise, meditation, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy.
  5. Embrace imperfection: Recognize that making mistakes and experiencing setbacks are a natural part of being human. Rather than being overly critical of yourself, try to embrace your imperfections and view them as opportunities for growth and learning.
  6. Be kind to yourself: Be gentle and compassionate with yourself, especially when you’re struggling or experiencing difficult emotions. Treat yourself with the same care and kindness that you would extend to a loved one.

Coping With Grief

March 20, 2023 by Gabe

The death of a friend, family member, or significant other is an inescapable part of life. It is a painful, challenging, and often overwhelming experience that everyone will face at some point. The grieving process is unique to each individual, with no one-size-fits-all approach to coping with loss. In this article will explore the feelings associated with the death of a loved one and offer strategies for navigating the complex journey of grief and healing.

Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.

Jamie Anderson

I. Understanding Grief and Loss

The grieving process: Grief is a natural, complex, and multifaceted response to loss. It can manifest as a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, fear, and even relief. The grieving process is different for everyone, with some people experiencing intense emotions for a short period, while others may take a longer time to heal.

The stages of grief: The Kübler-Ross model, developed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, outlines five common stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. While not everyone will experience these stages in the same order or intensity, they provide a helpful framework for understanding the grieving process.

II. Coping with the Death of a Loved One

Acknowledge your feelings: Give yourself permission to feel the full range of emotions that come with loss. It is crucial to confront and process these feelings rather than suppress or avoid them.

Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups to share your experiences and feelings. Connecting with others who have experienced a similar loss can provide comfort and understanding.

Express yourself: Find ways to express your grief, such as journaling, art, or talking to a trusted confidante. Creative outlets can help you process your emotions and make sense of your loss.

Create a memorial: Honor the memory of your loved one by creating a memorial or tribute. This can be as simple as lighting a candle, planting a tree, or creating a scrapbook filled with memories.

Maintain a routine: Grief can be disorienting and overwhelming. Establishing and maintaining a routine can provide a sense of stability and normalcy during this challenging time.

Prioritize self-care: Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being is essential during the grieving process. Make sure to eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. Consider seeking professional help if your grief becomes overwhelming or unmanageable.

Be patient with yourself: Healing takes time, and there is no set timeline for grief. Allow yourself the time and space you need to process your emotions and come to terms with your loss.

Accept change: The death of a loved one can change your life in profound ways. Recognize that it is normal for relationships, routines, and even your sense of self to shift as you navigate through grief.

Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.

III. Moving Forward: Finding Hope and Healing

Embrace new experiences: As you move through the grieving process, try to find new activities, hobbies, or interests that can help you find joy and meaning in life.

Continue to remember your loved one: Keep their memory alive by sharing stories, celebrating their accomplishments, and cherishing the moments you spent together.

Focus on personal growth: Use the experience of grief and loss as an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. It can be a catalyst for positive change and new perspectives.

Final Thoughts

Coping with the death of a loved one is a deeply personal and unique experience. While the journey through grief can be challenging, understanding your feelings, seeking support, and finding ways to honor your loved one’s memory can help you navigate this difficult time. Be patient with yourself and remember that healing is a process that takes time. Embrace the changes in your life, focus on personal growth, and cherish the memories of your loved one as you move forward. Ultimately, as you continue to heal, you may find newfound strength, resilience, and even a deeper appreciation for life’s precious moments. Remember, you are never alone in your grief, and there is always hope for healing and transformation.

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and John Kessler

Great Quotes

March 1, 2023 by Gabe

Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.

Eskimo Proverb

This proverb suggests that the love of our lost ones continues to shine down upon us even after they are gone, and that their happiness and presence can still be felt in our lives. It acknowledges that while the pain of loss may never completely go away, there is comfort and beauty in knowing that our loved ones are at peace.

Your loved one’s presence is still with you, even if they are no longer physically present.
